What to do in Antigua

The Antigua cultural experience:

For an opportunity to party with the locals, visit during carnival season in August and enjoy two consecutive days of non-stop dancing and lively Caribbean steel bands.

Team and racket sports: 

Antiguans are more than a little devoted to cricket, and the Antigua Recreation Ground is one of the best places in the Caribbean to see a local, regional, or international match. Tennis and golf are also very popular on this Caribbean island, with excellent facilities for the practice of both.

Nightlife:

Antigua has a good choice of bars, clubs and casinos, which are mainly concentrated around residential areas and resorts such as Jolly Beach, English Harbour and St John's.

Culture and History:

Start in St John's and visit the Cathedral and the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda. Next, head to Nelson's Dockyard in English Harbour, one of the world's finest Georgian naval ports, and while you are there climb the hill to take in the spectacular view from Shirley Heights. Falmouth is another important landmark, and reveals the island's colonial past. The restored sugar mill of Betty's Hope and the Gunthorpes Sugar Factory are also well worth a visit.

Nature and Adventure:

Choose from a range of eco walking tours or go for a trip to the uninhabited neighbouring island of Redonda. Go kayaking at Shirley Heights, zip line through the Antiguan rainforest, or take a helicopter ride around volcanic Montserrat. Bird-watchers should take a day trip to the island of Barbuda, home to the Caribbean's most amazing bird sanctuaries.
